There's only a couple of reasons why a toilet doesn't flush. One is that its plugged up. If that's the case, then as others have suggested try to find the plunger.

I think that what you are really saying though - What do you do when you try to flush, but nothing happens? Many people have NO idea about how a toilet works. The hardware inside a toilet is deceptively simple - a chain is attached to the flush handle. The other end is connected to a flap that keeps the water from running out until you move the handle. There is also a stem that comes up which allows water to flow in. Attached to this is some kind of float to tell the valve when to run, when to stop.

In the case of no flush action - lift the lid off of the back of the toilet. Sometimes that little chain has fallen off of the flush handle. The tank will be full of water in this case. Reach down and pull up on it gently and it will flush.

Other times, the "float" has stuck in place and did not fall when the water left with the last flush. The tank will be empty in this case. Gently push down on the float, and the water will begin to refill, at which time you can flush normally.

Don't be grossed out by the water in the tank. Believe it or not, it is the EXACT same water you use to drink and brush your teeth. No sewage can get up into the tank. The only thing you might see in there is a mineral build up which is the cause of most of those problems.

If you can hear water running, and see water dribbling into the toilet, but it still won't flush and the water won't quit running you have the third possibility. This is where the flap has not sealed after the last flush. Often times this is caused by excess chain that somehow got between the flap and seat. Just move the excess chain out of the way, let the tank fill and then flush.

In any event, try those simple solutions, and get it flushed. Afterwards, inform the host that you had difficulty flushing so that they may take a look at it before the next person runs into the same problem. You get bonus points for informing them of the problem while not making them deal with the waste you left in the toilet in the first place!

Meanwhile, do yourself a favor and look inside your own toilet at home sometime. Watch what happens as you flush, and you will get a clear idea of where the potential problems will be.

The best thing to do is to look all over the bathroom for a plunger if you cant find one then you close the lid and then go find the homeowner / renter and say look sorry dude but I went in your toilet and when I got in there it was over flowed ... that saves you some embaresment but lets them know that it needs attention...

next time before you go flush first before you go to make sure the crapper works.... after it works then use it... if it doesnt work go to the nearest 7/11 then come back to the party with an extra 6 pack in tow none the less for the wear.....

It happens to everyone.. and I think it is everyone worst nightmare. LOL

Blessings to you,

If it doesn't flush because it's clogged, look around feverishly for a plunger. If it doesn't flush because it's actually broken, look for a large container (waste basket, bucket, etc.) and fill it up in the tub and dump it in the reservoir tank (assuming it's empty). It should flush after that.

I'd leave the bathroom and shut the door behind me to make it appear like the bathroom is in use, that way others won't go in there. Go to the owner of the home and explain what happened, then offer to plunge the toilet. Like they say, **** happens!

Close the toilet lid and quietly take the host/hostess aside and tell them. Offer to help.

First try to plunge it then if that doesn't work tell the owner. There really is no way to make it pretty.

Avoid the situation all-together; don't go #2 at a party.

Been there. First, you test flush. If it doesn't work, inform your host or hostess.
