They'll be there until someone comes up with a politically viable way to get them out. The troops were sent in because the voters bought Bush's line that by our going in, centuries of regional strife: ethnic conflicts, religious conflicts, cultural conflicts, not to mention the pent up hatred all the former victims feel for their former oppressors, would instantly disappear and that the Iraqis would all adopt, without question or hesitation, the fundamentalist Christian values of his Republican supporters. The current plan appears to be to leave them there untill that happens. The troops will come home when the U.S. voters finally get tired of losing servicemen in a no-win situation, just as happened in Nam. How long that will take, who knows? I say this as a Nam era vet who stayed in until his retirement at the end of Desert Storm.
