I have my 357 loaded with 1 shot shell then followed by jacketed hollow points. I am thinking that the spray of shot will at least slow down or stop an intruder and is less likely to miss. I am a good shot, but I have never been in a life or death shooting situation. Am I correct in my thinking or am I just going to put a bunch of BB holes in a really mad person.

I am not actually looking for the shotshell to stop the person, I guess I just want it to confuse them long enough for me to get an accurate shot with a jacketed hollow point...I know those have stopping power.

Bound's hubby here:

Your .357 Shotshells are generally loaded with #9 shot ... finer than birdshot. This shell is typically loaded, and used, for snakes ... not the two-legged type!

Using a .357 shotshell against a person is not wise. If you can place the shot in the eyes, you may blind the person ... otherwise, you will mildly irritate them. In the scenario you described, the .357 shotshell does not have any stopping power. Do not expect the .357 shotshell to stop an intruder ... unless they need to stop to laugh or sneeze.

Good luck.

ETA: If you can not make a quick, placed shot as soon as you feel you need to draw your pistol, hang it up and either get a shotgun or tatoo "VICTIM" on your forehead!

Oh, yeah. Definite stopping power there. Shotguns are preferred for home defense for exactly the reasons you mention. And those BB's are likely to go all the way through. You'll stop ANYONE with that.

If you're not looking to kill, they used to use rock salt as the load generations ago, but that likely WILL just get him mad.

very poor self defense loads. they might kill a snake at about 15 ft, but they won't stop a person. maybe if you put the barrel in their eye and pull the trigger.

if they are close and have a crow bar, then you will have a crowbar in your head before they stop.

Too tell you the truth.... that may kill him if you shoot them all. 1 or two will do. He will be in such pain he might just fall to the floor, since it will cause many holes insted of 1 it will cause more pain then normal; and to answer your question yes it will have stopping power.
