In the Bible in Romans it says "For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" so we are all labeled sinners - we sin and are in need of a Savior. That someone is Jesus Christ. He gave his life for us so that we might be reconciled back to the Father - God cannot allow sin into Heaven - He is a Holy God. SO - with Jesus as our Savior and Lord - we can have Eternal Life. God will no longer see our sin but see Jesus instead. I hope this helps.

...This is Romans 5:8. Quite often reading the verse(s) in context will help, so here it is (Romans 5:6-8):
...6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
...7 For one will hardly die for a righteous man; though perhaps for the good man someone would dare even to die.
...8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
...The Bible is making the point here that at the right time, Christ died for the ungodly (and we are all ungodly).
...It also points out that one will hardly die for a good man or a righteous man - but Jesus died for His enemies, demonstrating God's great love for us.

Jesus died in my (And your) place on the cross. While he was being crucified he paid the price for our sins on the cross. Eternal life is a free gift from God. All you have to do is ask and accept His forgiveness. There is a chasm between man and God. Jesus's death on the cross is our bridge over that chasm. He is the only way into Heaven. He is the Way, the Truth and the Light. No Man comes unto the Father but by Him.

Jesus, knowing that his very creation were sinners and not how He created us to be, knew that the only way we could be saved from that sin, and put back into a right standing with God was to die for us. His dying for us was enough for God to forgive us for our sins. Jesus' death on the cross should have been our death. For our sin, we should never see heaven.
So, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us, so that we may be forgiven and have fellowship with him. Only his death from his sinless life could do that. Take care.

Rom 5:6 For while we were still weak, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly.
Rom 5:7 For one will scarcely die for a righteous person--though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die--
Rom 5:8 but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
Rom 5:9 Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
Rom 5:10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
It is explaining how we in no way deserved what Christ did for us, but he did it anyway.

Echoing a few others, I believe the importance is that He loved us dirty. Dirty filthy sinners, yet He loved us and was willing to die for us, with no requirement from us whatsoever. We can choose to believe or to reject, but He loved even the soul who will not believe and ends up in Hell as much as He loved us who do believe.

God know our conditions, and love us so much that he died for us, without us doing anything for Him. What he required is for us to believe and obey.
It is the basis of Salvation by faith, and not by work.
Actually, the more important one is on the earlier verse in that Chapter 5, been justified by faith, and have peace with Lord Jesus.

The importance is that while we were still the enemies of God, Christ died for us in an attempt to bring us back to God. Some would dare to lay down their life for a friend but no one would die for their enemy!

In other words, Jesus did not wait until we deserved being saved, he died for us as a pure act of love. The importance of this statement is that no one can say he or she earned their salvation, and it is a statement of the generosity of God.

It shows us that we don't have to clean up our act to come to Christ. That He accepts us just as we are. We, therefore, shouldn't feel like we have to be perfect to come to Him because He already knew we would sin and yet loved us enough to chose to die for us anyway. There's no other love like that and never will be. We are very fortunate to know this. Once we come to Christ, He will help us with all the hurts, habits, and hangups we have.
