according on what kind of car you're looking for?
car: i'd say a chevy cavalier or saturn
truck: old model toyota (though hard to find for under a grand)
suv: jeep cherokee, my personal pick because i own one and i've never had a problem out of it, runs great, got 111,000 miles on it and i've known them to sell for anywhere from $500 to a little over a grand for 1991 to ol around 1997

A good solid car for under a grand would have to be the Ford Thunderbird 85 to 88.

The are fairly large and more substantial, great for bullying on the freeway. Trust me, you will far more safer in it that say a Honda or Toyota.

The Thunderbird also get very good gas mileage for its size, avg about 25 mpg.

The best handling T-Bird is the Turbo-coupe
