Take him to the groomers and let the "professionals" deal with him. That way, you can just drop him off and come back smiling (if you choose to come back :-)).

It does sound like he has a medial issue . Cats don't naturally smell noticeably bad unless there is something wrong with their diet or their health. Most cats are clean by nature. It's probably worth a trip to the vet and/or the groomers for a check up and a cleaning. If you are scared to touch him, some areas have mobile vets and groomers that will come to you.
If he will let you get close enough to pet him, most pet stores sell gloves that double as a comb. You can control the shedding by catching it in the glove before its all over your home. They also sell the same type of thing but you put it on the places he likes to rub against.

I agree with Katrina -- healthy cats do not smell or shed excessively. Look to the diet and go for the healthier food. That means more money at the pet store and no expensive groomer costs or visits to the emergency room.
For information on the best foods go to: www.catinfo.com and www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled, "Selecting a Good Commercial Pet Food."
At fifteen pounds your cat is obese. An average male cat in good shape will be around 12 pounds, give or take a pound either way.

I'm with TrainerMan, if the cat is mean, you might be better off taking him to a groomer.
You could also try some sort of shed control product. Usually, you put it in food or water and it will help with the shedding problem. A cat's nutrition can have a big impact, too. I've noticed my male is shedding less since I switched him to a higher quality food.

I have a mean cat that is a long hair and we have to get pills from the vet to sedate him and then take him to a groomer that handles cats as well as dogs. Putting a cat in water is NOT an option, especially if it's mean to begin with. The best way to cut back on shedding is to brush daily.

Your safest bet is to take it to a groomer to do it, just make sure the groomer doesn't knock them out to bath them, most just use musels, this is healthier for them. Unfortunatly a bath will only help with the smell, to lower the amount of sheding, the cat really needs to be brushed daily. This is the only real way to keep the shedding to a minimum. Sorry to give bad news. Good luck.

There is a gizmo on the web called the shed ender. It's a sort of brush. I have one, I use it 2 times a week. It keeps my cats from shedding all over the house!

Yikes! If you go to PETSMART at most of the registers they have pet wipes to remove dirt and oder, I've never used them but they should leave the kitty fresh and clean again. If that dosen't work maybe you should get him neutered if he already isn't. Usually that calms him down. Is he in for any shots? Usually when they give him shots it makes him drowsy. My puppy is scared crud of baths and when he gets into the water he is so scared and just sits there almost like he is paralized! Good luck to you and your roommates itty bitty kitty!

She needs to BRUSH him. If he's 15 lbs, then he's too fat to properly groom himself, especially back by his tail. She needs to brush him everyday. If he's smelling, she needs to take him to the vet. And let me remind you, you said it's your roommate's cat................why do YOU have to accomplish this monumental task?
