Alcohol alters one's personality and emotions and self control, for some to more extremes than others. The phrase "crying in your beer" came from lots of people getting all sappy and emotional and actually crying into their beer. That's why a good bartender is an amateur psychologist as well!

I think its cos beer makes you emotional and more uninhibited. So you're more likely to cry in your beer than your can of coke.
Unless it has lots of vodka in it lol

Go to ANY redneck bar on a saturday night and stick around until closing. You will see a few basket cases crying and slobbering.

You get drunk, you lose control of your inhibitions, you pass through the happy stage (assuming you were happy to begin with) and the depressant effect of the alcohol makes you maudlin. Eventually you tell strangers your life story, get to the bit where she left you with the kids and broke your heart, then begin weeping...
