Hi Kurt;

Yes puppies like all dogs have a very strong sense of smell and it sounds like she was used to the first brand you were using and she may not undrstand that this second pad is also for making potty on it - you may have to actually place some of her urine on this other brand of pad so she can smell the urine and make the connection, or you can get some more of the original brand of pads that you started her with or you can just start teaching her to go potty outside using her crate and forget about the pads forever.

Best of Luck with your puppy

P.S. You should consider crate training her even if you let her sleep somewhere else - this crate becomes her cave and it is the place that she will sleep in voluntarily when she is ill or tired or to go and chew her favorite bone and it is the one way that she can convey to strangers and children that she does not want to play anymore - and as an added bonus, if you ever have to travel or move into a new home, her crate will smell familiar so she will not be upset by a change of her surroundings since her facorite bed with always be with her - and while she is a puppy, if you put a towel or a shirt of yours, that smells like you in her bed in her crate, she will feel even closer to you when you are not home - this again helps her to feel more secure and a secure happy puppy is a quiet puppy.

If your puppy never had the problem before you changed pad brands then I would think yes, that is the reason. Dogs have a high sense of smell and she was trained to pee pee on those pads with that particular sent. When you changed she did not associate pee peeing on the new pads because they did not smell right to her. You will have to start the training process over if it has been any length of time since you have changed pads. Puppies have short memories. You might be able to train her to the new pads, but you will have to confine her to the area where the pads are located and not let her have the run of the house. It confuses them and their bladders are small and they can't "hold it" for long so they just go where they are. Give your puppy a small area to play in and cover the area with the pads, she'll get the idea after awhile.

Some pads have a scent to tell the puppy to pee there, others may not. It might be why shes not using them anymore. Go back to the original ones and stick to them if she likes them.

I don't know anything about "puppy pads" except that if you want to be cleaning up pads all the time, go for it. If you want to EVER take them outside, skip the pads and go outside now. Otherwise, you'll only confuse the puppy by teaching them that it's o.k. to go in the house. It doesn't take them long to figure out that they shouldn't go in the house, that THAT is done outside.

Start training her to go outside. puppy pads just encourage your dog to get in the habit of peeing indoors.

Puppy pads are confusing to dogs. You are training her to potty inside, on paper, so she will want to always go inside on paper. You need to train her to potty outside. The absolute best way to potty train a dog is to crate train. The best training book, Housebreaking: Pure and Simple by Mark and Dru Katz.

Yes, she was used to one brand..Puppies are funny like that..It is because they go by scent, rather than function..She expects it to smell just as the first brand...When she is older, she will recognise them by function..

Even if you smell one, and then the other, you might not be able to smell the difference, but puppies can tell..

Why cant you just use the old crate method? Why buy a bunch of crap for your puppy? USE a crate!

Are you just too lazy to teach your dog to go outside? By teaching her to go inside you will probably have a VERY HARD time getting her to go outside now.
