You are missing the difference in meaning of the different uses of the word fool. Jesus said not to call anyone a fool using the Old Testament usage of the word. It was very demeaning to be called a fool. In St. Paul's use of the word fool, he was using it not to call himself foolish but to say he would be foolish in the eyes of non-believers for the sake of Jesus Christ. In other words he would rather be thought of as a fool than to not follow Jesus.

Paul WAS whipped....
A fool for a cause is a figure of speech.
A fool is a person who can not or will not heed instruction.
I was a stupid fool before I accepted Christ. Now I'm a grateful fool......for Christ.

the 'fool' bit is about the message not the messenger
often the simple gospel message of Jesus sounds like foolishness to the world-hardened masses and yet it works
it doesn't mean that believers have to of necessity to be a fool in order to get the message across

Obviously, from the answers you've received, you can see where the Bible is true when it says the preaching of the cross is like foolishness to those who do not believe. Sad, isn't it, that so many are so foolish. Hopefully, one day those who don't believe will have their eyes opened. Until then, we can only pray for them.
