We have one Pitt and I grew up with many. The most important thing is to be firm, loving, and provide positive reinforcement. They aren't bad dogs if socialized, so take them to parks and keep them in line.

Our current Pitt lives perfectly well with a Chihuahua, 2 Queensland Healers, several cats, chickens, and even a hamster. He isn't vicious towards them, doesn't attack, but he was socialized to think they were family, and learned early on not to attack.

They can be stubborn, so I'd advise training classes, although some won't let Pitts in because of the bad reputation they have. If you can't get in a training class, I'd call and see if you could pay extra for private lessons.

I do pitbull rescue. I see alot of pits that have been trained in the wrong way. They become irratated with people always pushing and pulling. They are best taught by treats and strong word commands (not yelling). They are great companion animals as well.....please read below....

In recent years, pit bulls have gained more than just a foothold in the public awareness. Unscrupulous breeding and negative media attention have resulted in many apartment complexes, neighborhoods and even counties imposing bans on the breed, citing them as "inherently dangerous" to the public.
But did you know that pit bulls, despite the fact that they were originally bred to fight with each other, were also bred to be trustworthy and friendly to people? These dogs actually earned the nickname "nursemaid's dog," because they were so reliable with young children.

Today, however, the breed often attracts the worst kind of dog owners--those who are only interested in them for fighting or protection. It's a shame what has happened to this loyal and affectionate breed-but as the pit bull population has increased so rapidly, shelters are now struggling to deal with an overflow of image-plagued, hard-to-place dogs. And despite its illegality, people are still training and breeding pit bulls to participate in dog fights in cities and towns across the country.

Enroll your new dog in a reward based training program. Pits learn very well with this method. Your dog will need all the same basic manners and socialization of any other dog breed. Avoid training your Pit with the standard adversive methods. They use pain as a motivator to stop doing something. Most Pits can easily tolerate the pain and will suck up a little discomfort to get what they want. Pits (along with 96% of the dogs that exist) respond the best and most reliably with reward based methods.

Treat him just like any other dog. I don't care what people say about pit's they are the most loving dogs around. I have had pits for years and all of them have been the best animals ever. The reason people talk so bad about them is because all they hear about them are the bad things mostly the ones that are mistreated. Just treat him good and he will be a great pet.

This is a serious situation - You train a Pit Bull the same way you would train any dog however you need to be exta careful because a pit bull, when a pit bull bites, the strength of the pit bull jaw can cause a lot of damage - Pit Bull dogs need a firm hand in a trainer and this breed of dog is not recommended for dog owners who have no knowledge of how to handle dogs.

I strongly suggest that you spend a few hundred dollars and hire an experienced trainer to come and train you so that you will know all the things you need to do to train this dog. You have to train this dog to walk on a leash with manners, You need to train this dog to follow the following commands - Come, Sit, Stay, Down, Sit Down, Lie Down, Wave, Drop It, Crawl, Back Up, Out,
Potty, Car, Stairs, Medicine, Walk, Cookies, Treat, Kisses, Nice,
No, Give-Me, Mommy, Daddy, Heel, Easy, Slow, Slow-Down,
Water, Drink, Eat, Dinner, Baby, Company, Friend, Shoes, Tissues, Bed, Crate, Crate-Up - and there are many more

you should get from the trainer a procedure for crate training your dog - your dog needs to be crate trained - his or her meals should be fed to him in this crate, he should sleep in this crate and you should have a soft plush dog bed inside this crate and the crate should be large enough to accomodate this dog when he or she is full grown.

you also need instructions for the Nothing In Life is Free training program so that you can teach this puppy that you are the Alpha pack leader and that the dog is the follower in this relationship.

The dog must sleep in his crate and not on your bed - the dog should only be allowed on the furniture when it has been invited up on the furniture - if the dog just jumps up on the furniture without being invited, you must tell the dog NO and make the dog get down and stay down

If the dog does not walk properly on a leash, I suggest that you purchase a martingale collar, a gentle leader head halter and two leashes - Read the instructions with the halti and you can start to teach the dog how to walk properly and never let the dog walk in front of you - always equal with your knees on the left side of you. Walk with the dogs head up - not sniffing the ground - once the walk for exercise is done then you can allow the dog to sniff around the ground and make potty, this is the dogs reward for walking beside you nicely -

There are so many things that you need to be taught - it would be so much easier for you if you hire some one with at least 10 years of hands on experience with Pit bulls and with experience in animal behaviors -

Good Luck

Call your local SPCA or check with your vet about dog obdience classes in your town. It's the best way to train your dog and you will get the help you need for hard situations!

Good luck and remember.....a dog treated with respect will give and show respect in return.

Same as any other dog. Establish yourself and everyone else in the family as the pack leader(s) (he should know that YES the kids are bosses too), correct when it makes a mistake and behaves incorrectly, praise good behaviour, exercise it, love it.

Im not fond of pits to many bad experience with them with my dog and with my child. I would hire somebody to come in and show you how to train that kind of dog , and then if you live in area like I do we are not allowed to have pits in our city limit due to many problems with them. Also most places because they are considered very vicious animals you have to have a chain link fence up or some kind of fence up and so many feet high and you have to have signs posted beware of dog. I know when my friend had one and if someobdy came into the yard and it wasnt posted they was liable for medical expenses if any occured. I would check with the laws in your city and see what you h ave to follow for a animal like that

first off you need to make sure this is the right breed for you...if you are a first time dog owner you might want to rethink this....pitbulls are wonderful dogs but are not for everybody...they need a firm loving hand and lots of socialization ..they are very smart and willing to please but need to be owned by RESPONSIBLE pet owners that are willing to always obey leash laws and will spay or neuter a pet.
