It could be anyone, living or dead. A friend, family member, person from history.....anything goes.
In your own words if you will. Please, no scripture, no copy/paste. Thanks.

Fireball, anyone can quote scripture. I want to hear what YOU have to say. That's why I state no scripture.

I admire my paternal grandmother. She was widowed during the Depression with three children under the age of 7 and by sheer grit and determination managed to raise them by herself without any help. She also decided never to marry again because no one but her would be the ones to discipline her children.

There are a number of people that I admire-but overall I'll have to go with the old cliches-Mahatma Gandhi & Mother Theresa. These were the people who have given so much to hmanity, concepts of peace, love, non-violence, etc.
There are a number of good authors that I admire, one of them is Ayn Rand and two from the Astronomy/science/science fiction category would be Carl Sagan and Isaac Asimov. They are very good writers, to know why I admire them you have only to read or see Cosmos, or Contact or Brocca's Brain, The Foundation Series or any of Asimov's textbooks on subjects of science. Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged or Fountainhead are two of the best books I've ever read, and I must have read over 5000 to date.

I admire people who can live in an oppressive country that doesn't allow them freedom of worship like in China or North Korea for example. They are ones who truly put their lives on the line for their faith and aren't shrinking back even when they are thrown in prison. They lean and trust in God no matter what is before them. We in the western world have a hard time staying on a diet and whimper when we don't get our way. We throw garbage out on the street and grimace at other drivers on the freeway. We are greedy, immature babies in the west who have been mollycoddled in every way! That's just my opinion.

Mother Teresa inspired me by the fact that she gave up so much in this life to help the poorest of the poor and even lived among them. I'm not catholic but I think she did more as a Catholic to bring people together and set priorities right more than any pope ever did.

I don't know that I admire one person only but rather different aspects of different ppl. I admire Oprah for her business sense. I admire Kate Hepburn for her screen presence. I admire the desperately poor for their courage to continue on and not give up. I admire adult youth, for it's physical ability to do what it wants. I admire the Christian religion for it's ability to hound and convert the minds of others. I admire the ppl of New Orleans that returned to nothing and believe that they can regain their lives. I admire those who have knowledge and use it in a practical manner. I admire those who in the face of criticism not only choose their own path, but follow it. And I admire my mother the most. She was selfless for her children, taught them to stand on their own two feet, and loved them no matter what they did. She encouraged each to be who they were, never to be ashamed of honesty and that each could be or do whatever their hearts desired.

I admire many people, living and dead. But to answer your question I will choose Winston Churchill because he is one of my favorite historical figures. He was quite funny and I always appreciate a sense of humor. I admire his tenacity and courage, his willingness to go against the popular views of his day, his friendship with FDR, his commitment to victory, his intellect, his abilty to speak and write with excellence, his artistic talents, his belief in destiny. He was a great man.

i saw on the news last year where an old woman was approached by a man who in the past helped to commit unspeakable horrors against her people and he asked for her forgiveness. she took his hands in hers and kissed his cheek.
EDIT
"a little weird for religious section to ask UNrelated ques and say No scripture..."
the section is not for scripture, its for religion and spirituality. is there anything more spiritual than human kindness?
