I don't know if you would call it an ingredient, but it's the caffeine. It causes indigestion because coffee stimulates the stomach's production of acid.
I can't drink it because of the same reason. For more info, check out the link below.
You may also want to try decaffinated coffee, or switch it up with black tea.

RE:
Why does coffee upset my stomach (only sometimes)?
I can drink coffee one day and be fine but then the next day (or a few days after) when I drink it I will have an upset stomach with cramping and everything. Please help! I'm looking for the ingredient in coffee that does this.

It's not an ingredient. It's just the way coffee is. Coffee is acidic. That's what probably upsets your stomach, especially if you're not eating or drinking other fluids throughout the day.
People say that using coffee grounds are excellent for growing plants. BUT, they are only good for growing plants that are acidic soil loving plants. Some plants need more acidity to grow and some need less. Just an example if you have ever heard that coffee grounds are good for plants, or acidic needing plants in that matter.

I get stomach aches after drinking coffee sometimes too. It can't be the caffine, because I don't get the aches after drinking a soda. The only time I notice the aches is when I've drank coffee on an empty stomach...you too? Make sure you eat....I don't know what ingredient does it, just that I can't drink on an empty stomach.

I have a hunch you're not a genuine, bona fide, adult strength coffee drinkin regular yet. If you use milk or cream it might curdle in your system. It could be your just not yet accustomed to the acidic properties. Maybe your cup has been neglected. I drink mine black with sugar & not too much sugar or I'll get squeemish. I've been drinkin coffee for more than 40 years but if the cup is dirty or the coffee too weak, it's just an futile ingestion of keyrap. The habit of mine is to enjoy about 16-32 oz before noon & after that, no more coffee til tomorrow! There IS a good deal of acid in a standard coffee serving of 8 oz. I feel that I've got a cast iron stomach & my 16-32 oz is double strength 'strong like bull'! I will put 2 tablespoons of instant coffee into a 16 oz mug with a tablespoon of sugar. while most use a teaspoon in 8 oz with 1 teaspoon of sugar. It's a waste of time for me to use just 1 tablespoon in a 8 oz cup with a teaspoon of sugar because it's too many trips to remake it. I've doubled the actual coffee content & halved the trips. It's smart to enjoy toast or a donut to absorb the extra acids. You'll probably grow into it as your intake may become more routine. I used to drink the standard 8oz cups for years before I realized the beautiful flavor of 100%Kona Coffee from the Hawa!!an Islands. That was about 20 years ago & now, to compensate for the lack of that delicacy, the double dose is necessary to come close! Cheers! ;-)

Coffee contains caffeine and is a diuretic, which will make you have to urinate more frequently. It also can upset and cause cramping to your intestinal, abdomen area if you drink on an empty or near empty stomach. Imagine if you take a laxative, which helps to clean out your stomach( makes you have to go #2), that causes cramping occasionally as will coffee.

Caffeine. I don't drink it. It is supposed to make us nervous and jittery and have stomach aches. It is the plants natural defense so when animals eat the leaves or beans they will get sick and not eat it again. Why people drink it?....well some people like the buzz and thier tummys are tougher or just used to the effects.

I don't know. i have the same problem, but I have tried the new coffee from Folger's that is gentle on the stomach, and it really works. I have not had any problems at all when I drink it.

Actually, it's very acidic. If you eat something with it, it won't be as bad. And, there's a new product on the market that claims it won't upset your stomach - specifically less acid.
