to b simple, a router is a little box (like a modem) that takes the modem signal and routes it to more that one computer for a home network of more than one computer. Routers are not all wireless and unless you learn how to set up a wireless with proper security settings your next door neighbor could use that connection. If you need to use a laptop or PC in more than one room then you get the wireless router and 'Google' how to set it up proper. Otherwise stick with the wire.

You are asking more about a firewall/router/nat device like you find at most people's homes i take it. If this is the case, they are generally a small box of varying colors and shapes made by companies like linksys, netgrear, belkin, d-link, etc.... They make it so you can share your internet connection in your home or office between multiple computers. basically, the internet provider gives you 1 public internet address, just like you have one phone number. if you want to share that, you have to have a device that can do NAT, or natural address translation, to translate your private computer addresses to the 1 public one that the provider gives you. the are not all wireless, some are both wired and wireless, while some are just wired.

A router is a device that routes data packets Can be used to connect multiple PC's to the internet, for example. It's not only used in wireless connections, but can be hard wired as well. If you have multiple PCs in your home office, you can just use an ethernet connection to "hook up" more than one PC and create a LAN.
