I work in a hospital. Most of the time when someone flatlines they do not come back, however sometimes the do. There is an ACLS protocol that we follow when a person arrests. Several drugs are pushed thru an IV and if necessary the person is shocked. They are definitely dead when a code is called. IF a person is resuscitated and you get a heart rate back you continue with life support.
You just don't "pull the plug". A lot is involved before that decsison is made. Several test are performed to determine viability and quality of life. I do not think it is murder.....

I think it is inhumane to have someone on life support when they don't want to be. I think the idea of a 'living will' that states conditions under which doctors can terminate your life is a good idea.

This might seem mercenary, but it is also grossly irresponsible to use public money and scarce hospital resources to keep some withered non-human alive, when there are so many people who never have the opportunity to receive basic health care, dental care, or housing and food. I think if you looked at the 'good' done by keeping someone 'alive' - and are they really alive? - and compared it to the good you could do using the resources in other ways, there would be no comparison.

However, any laws about this need to include a tribunal becuse, as per Schiavvo, there will always be people with vested interests whose integrity is questionable - we don't want any mistakes.

I was in a position to let a relative go.This person was not brain dead, she told me she did not want to die.She was 85 years old and we were told she had less then a year. I was the only one who voted not to pull the plug.I stopped the plug from been pulled because I knew it was murder. The rest of the family felt I was a fool.

This is a in depth ethical and legal question. Worst thing we can do is turn on each other for our opinions... but no I wouldn't say it's murder 100% of the time. Depends on the situation.

I WOULD, however, say that firing a good doctor is possibly murder. Who's responsible for a shortage of doctors and overpriced healthcare? Yes. That's right. Tort law. You got it.

no i dont think it is torture to keep someone on life support if there might be a chance they will pull out of it, but if looks as if there is know hope, you should be able to pull the plug.

Well, if there is no chance of survival then it would probably be the most humane thing to do, rather than do let them suffer. If you were in a vegetative state, what would you want for you?
