I want a medium sized, sweet/loveable, one man companion type dog that would behave in the house. What type of breed should I choose?

I would go to your local humane society and visit with the dogs, see what one stands out for you, the people there should be able to tell you something about each dog and take it from there. Good Luck.

PS-It's personality not breed that is important to me.

What is your lifestyle? The dog's activity level is much more important than size. I have a german shepherd (smallish even for a female - she's 55 lbs). They have trended much larger of late, but the AKC says they should be between 65-85 lbs. depending on sex. The are lovely animals. VERY intelligent and easy to train, but so smart that you MUST keep their brains used. They shed alot, but even with my two small kids I'd choose her again. She is great with the kids, and a great house dog. Unless the kids are running wild and her right in there with them, you'd never know she was here. If things are calm, she is too, sleeps or watches quietly. They don't bark alot either. They are working dogs though, so you have to exercise them. Mine loves playing frisbee. Hubby takes her on his 3 mile run and when he gets about a 1/2 mi. from home (return trip) he lets her go so she can run full speed back home. Great dogs!!

If you are looking for a dog that is going to behave in your house right from the get-go then you should check out your local shelters/spca/or rescue animal groups.
Buying any type of puppy, no matter what breed, will require a lot of attention and devotion to training.
Before you buy any new compainion spend some time with them. Make sure that they are exacly what you are looking for to be your newest addition to your family! Best of luck!

I would suggest that you get a mixed breed. Personally I have found that they are more lovable, friendly, and they don't tend to have as many health problems as purebreds. If you do want a purebred then I would suggest that you check out the websites for most breeders...they usually have a feature where you fill in what you are looking for and they will give you a list of matching breeds and some information on them.

I have a Cockapoo and she is a sweetie. She loves to sit with me and watch tv, easy to house train and train to do tricks. She does not bark a lot and is a small-medium size dog. I love my doggie. She is a mix of two good dogs and is a great house dog.

The best dog to get is the one that fits your lifestyle. Do you have time to go out with your dog to exercise? Is there someone often at home? Do you have a backyard?

australian shepards, border collies, and beagles are nice dogs. siberian huskies are really well behaved and good companians too, but like to be outside and run around more than just be in the house. Same with golden retreivers but they might be bigger than what you want. i'm looking for a dog too but i want a smaller one. Good luck in finding one that you want i'm sure that when you make your decision the kind you choose will be perfect for you.

Local animal shelters have a variety of dogs, sometimes full bred. That is where I would start.I worked at a local animal shelter.I wouldn't go by the breed because they all have different personalities.

Breed's not important. Just look around for one that's friendly. Try the dog out, if it behaves you've got what you're looking for. If not, keep on looking.
