Our dog is a 13-year-old beagle, and for the past several months, he has spent every waking moment licking the floors. He only stops when he's asleep. He's had liver issues and is taking special L/D dog food which is helping his liver enzyme levels. Could his liver problems be the cause?

if he's purebred then he's most likely inbred, and that makes him not so smart. really inbred dogs do silly things like that. but beagles are pretty foolish in the first place.

Wow, Bob is not very nice about Beagles! Beagles rule! Add an oil supplement to your dog's food, such as flax oil. Just mix in a large tablespoon of it with every other meal...it will give him omega 3 oils which are great for his health (heart, skin, immune system). Also, supply your beagle with a treat everyday of a dentabone or other treat that requires a bit of chewing. The licking is an obsessive compulsive habit and my dog does the same, but I find if I keep him healthy and occupied, he will do it less. Don't forget to walk your dog as much as you can...because as I'm sure you already know, a tired Beagle is a good Beagle!

Please don't think that I'm a veterinarian because I'm not, but I have three dogs right now, and I've breed puppies before. I don't think that your dog is licking the floor because of his liver. I think that your dog likes the cleaning material that you use to clean the floor. You should try to move him outside and see if he obsessively liks the ground. If he does, I reccomend taking him to a doctor.

What I want to know is,,,,, what did you spill
"Chow Hounds" have about the best noses in the buisness, and they are prone to using their Vonernasal Organ (located in the roof of their mouth) to further inhance their ability to smell.

I agree with Jab, he is probably licking the floor and trying to get to the cleaner on the floor. Which is very harmful to him, please do not let him do this. Is there anyway you can block him from that room? Put up a gate or something?

Older dogs can get a type of Alzheimers Disease. Canine cognitive impairment I think. Makes them do nutty things. Ask the vet. They have meds for it.
