Your son is underweight for the "average" baby. I had one that was overweight and one that was underweight. They're 10 and 8 now and still considered that. One is tall and stocky, the other is tall and skinny. But they're both healthy and active. It's just their genetics.
Don't freak out and start feeding him protein shakes so he gains weight. He'll most likely always be on the small side if he was early. There's nothing wrong with it as long as he is gaining weight like he should and is healthy. Just keep feeding him normally like you are now and he'll be fine.
Good thing that quack got arrested, who knows what other nonsense he's been putting into people's heads. Ugh.
Good luck sweetie, hopefully this time around you'll get a good pediatrician. =)

here's a good website for you:
http://kidshealth.org/parent/
the natural thing to ask - how is he eating?
at 6 months he should be eating at least 4-6 ounces of formula each bottle without spitting it up - also is he eating cereal or baby food yet??
is the baby usually happy and alert/upset and crying/unresponsive? How often does he get sick?
if the baby is underweight it could be due to a variety of issues that no amount of food is going to change - and the only way to determine what exactly is to do a few tests.
I would find a doctor who could see your son within a few days if it concerns you a lot - if you have to travel a little so be it - i would never settle for a pediatrician who wouldn't allow a same day appointment.

Rice cereal and apple sauce is a good start. he's old enough for that. my 1st son was 10lbs at birth and my 2nd was 11lbs. i know how to get'em here chunky and keep'em that way. 1st time moms are always scared to explore and feed. if you give him the cereal, he will also sleep better. try mixing rice cereal with his formula then adding apple sauce until it is a consistency you can get into his body instead of his clothes.

Pediasure should help out. The doctor told me that my daughter was a few lbs underweight and that I was supposed to put globs of butter on her food. This is so stupid !!! Its like they were trying to make my child obese. Do not do anything stupid like that.

okay mine was premie too--just start putting 2 teaspoons of baby rice cereal and sometimes it is okay to use banana cereal for babies . put this in his milk you may have to punch a little bit bigger hole in th enipple ,but it works if for any chance he gets constipated , go to your local walmart or walgreens and purchase this stuff called senakot for kids it works great. my child was born at 28wks and weighed 2.5 pounds and in 3days dropped to 1.13 now she is 12and weighs 98lbs can't even tell she was premie

Does your baby drink formula? If so, double the amount of powder formula that you add to a regular amount of water. This should help. Also if your baby is eating any baby food, mix in rice cereal into his favorites. Maybe it is time to step up to another level of baby food.

at 6mos an infant should be double his birth weight. so, he's doing just fine. it's time to introduce some rice cereal too. he's growing fast right now. just make sure you give him his formula and add some rice to it. maybe introduce some bananas now too. good luck. he'll be fine.
doctors are getting too used to these huge kids anymore-- your boy is perfectly normal!!

i think the best thing is wait for a doctors advice ... if you do experimentation on your child .. your child might end up worse than he is right now ...
but i think the new doctor would let him change his milk and give him vitamins ...
Just wait for a doc.
REMEMBER .. not everything works similarly ...
this vitamin has worked for this child ... but maybe not to yours ... be carefull
