Naturalization is the process by which a legal permanent resident (LPR) can become a U.S. citizen. There is a minimum number (which varies depending on your immigration status) of years a person must be a LPR before they can apply to naturalize.
BTW JD, just for your information. An immigrant is not a naturlized citizen. An immigrant is a person who leaves one country with the intention of permanently settling in another. And you should also know that an estimated 40-60% of all illegal aliens/immigrants in the US originally came to the US legally (i.e., on some sort of visa) and overstayed. Thus, your statement that illegals are those that took it upon themselves and ignored the immigration laws of the US and unlawfully entered the US is wrong. A majority came legally and then overstayed.

The process by which a person from "a" country becomes a citizen of "b" country. Simpler example- A Russian citizen becoming an American citizen.
