There are lots of magazines and cookbooks out there for crockpot cooking, and it would be hard to pick even one as the best. The great thing about crockpots is that most everything can go in to cook. You have to be sure to cut root veggies up smaller, and put them on the bottom, though- to make sure they cook- and beans just don't seem to do real well. Otherwise, any recipe you have for the oven or stovetop will work, just cut the liquid to a cup or so or it will be swimming after 10 hours. Lean cuts of meat can get stringy, so if you want to do something like pork chops, don't opt for the lean boneless ones from the loin. Same for a beef roast- it will need some fat or it will end up stringy mess. Pot roasts like chuck and arm roast work best for the crockpot. You can remove the meat and veggies, drain off the broth and degrease it after it cooks for a wonderful gravy or soup base. Mostly, just experiment with recipes you already have for the oven or stove top, just remember to decrease the liquid you add. Most stuff will work out fine, and if it's a little more soupy than you like, just remember to reduce liquid a bit more the next time. Or do like I do, and freeze it against the soup pot days. The crock pot is ideal for slow cooking down bones and bits to a nice stock, at Thanksgiving you can throw the giblets in there the night before (except the liver- which gets nasty!), and have excellent turkey broth for whatever you like.

Try cooking a pot roast in it. You can buy cheaper cuts like blade or short rib. They come out falling apart every time. The slower cooking time tenderizes the meat much more than regular cooking does. I have a book called crock pot cookery which has a lot of great ideas and recipes.

Go to food.com and look up "slow cooker" or crock pot recipes.
BBQ pork is easy and great. Just put a pork roast in for 4 hours and add bbq sauce.
You can do a chicken and pasta meal, but add the pasta about 20 minutes before it is ready to eat: Boneless chicken, 1 package cream cheese, add noodles at the end = Yum-O!
You can doa great beef roast by adding carrots and cut up potatoes and cook for 3 hours - season with onion salt and fresh ground pepper as well as fresh garlic...

Honestly, some of the best recipes I've made in my crock pot came from the cookbook that came with the crock pot! (I have a Rival.) If this is what you have, look for the recipe called "Chicken Parisienne." It's actually called Mushroom Chicken, I believe, but you make it Parisienne by adding sour cream and white wine.

You can find some wonderful cookbooks for crock pots at your local bookstore. I even saw one at the check out counter at the grocery store. You said you don't want to buy books on the internet, but, amazon.com is safe and efficient if you change your mind. The best crockpot cookbook I've ever used is called "Crockery Cookery" by Mable Hoffman. I bought it years ago and have used it many, many times. It has all kinds of recipes to try, and they're all delicious. Enjoy! :)

A cookbook should have come with your crockpot. If not, here's a couple for you:
CROCK POT QUAIL
1 & 1/2 onion, chopped
2 cups tiny peeled carrots
2 large potatoes, peeled and cut into large pieces
1 Tbl. "Natures Seasons"
4 dressed quail
Tony Catcher's seasoning
1 can mushroom soup
Place veggies in crock pot, sprinkle with Nature's Seasons. Sprinkle quail with seasoning, place on top of veggies. Spread with soup. Cook on high for 1 hour, then switch to low for about 7 hours. Serve with rice. YUMMY!!!!!!!!!
SHRIMP CREOLE
1 & 1/2 cups chopped onion
3/4 cup chopped celery
1 clove garlic, minced
3/4 cup diced green pepper
1 28-ounce can whole tomates
2 8-ounce cans tomato sauce
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon sugar
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
1 bay leaf
3 to 6 drops Tabasco sauce
1 pound fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined (or 1 16-oz. pkg.
fozen shelled shrimp, rinsed and drained)
Combine all ingredients except shrimp in crockpot and stir to blend well. Cover and cook on LOW 7 to 9 hours. (High: 3 to 4 hours). During last hour turn crockpot to HIGH and add shrimp. Cook 1 hour or until shrimp turn pink.
Sure hope this helps! I have tons more, just wish I could tell you how to ask for more! Bon appetit!

I do pot roast in mine. The main roast with carrots, potatoes, celery, and onions. But you should be able to get some good recipes just by doing a search on Yahoo!, Google, or any other search engine. I only use mine in the fall and winter cause the spring and summer we are mostly cooking on the grill. Hope that helps!!
