For a hard boiled egg to be done yet not over done, I find 5 minutes is long enough to get a perfect boiled egg. Any longer is unnecessary and just takes the taste away and they get dry.
Enjoy!
I would like to apologize for this incorrect first answer. Since writing this I decided to boil eggs for myself and to my surprise found 5 minutes was not long enough. I had always heard 5 or 6 minutes was right but found both white and yolk was still runny unless boiled for 10 minutes. I never boiled eggs for an other reason but the coloring of easter eggs and over did them purposely . I'm glad you asked this so I myself would now know the correct time as it was a nice break from the regular breakfast eggs over easy I usually make...

To make a perfect hard boiled egg:
Place eggs in a saucepan.
Add water to cover an inch over the eggs.
Place on stove and bring to a boil.
As soon as the eggs start to boil, remove from heat and place cover on pan.
Let sit for 20 minutes.
Drain hot water and replace with cold water. I add a tray of ice cubes to the water to make sure the eggs stop cooking.
For a less hard egg, reduce the sitting time.
I have never had a bad hard boiled egg using this method.

Fill your pot with water and put your eggs into the water

Put the pot of eggs and water on the stove top and set the temperature to HIGH (boil)

As soon as the water is at a rolling boil (when large bubbles break the surface) allow the eggs to cook for 10 minutes.

Eggs are hard cooked but not hard as a rock!

Put egg in cold water.
Bring to a boil.
Boil 2 1/2 minutes for soft-boiled egg.
Or 4 minutes for hard-boiled egg.
Rinse off under cold water.

Once the water begins to boil, boil for 10 minutes for soft boiled eggs.

a lot has to depend on the number of eggs u r boiling together, n the water volume n temperature u bring the boil to. Just ONE egg in a pot small enough for it ......... maybe no more than 8 minutes. I went to my mom's school (tyranny), she'd given me many hard knocks for making mistakes when I was 12 - 20 yrs !!

Place eggs in a pot of cold water, add salt (prick the bottoms with a needle so the air bubble can escape and it won't crack)
Turn stove on, medium high, bring to rapid boil, let boil 3 minutes. Now turn off stove, remove pot from the stove, let eggs sit 2 minutes, then rinse in cold water, let cool on a towel.....

perfecto.
Get an egg timer!

There are some good answers above, but this is MY sure-fire way to have perfectly cooked hard-boiled eggs:

Put eggs in pot and cover with cold water.
Bring pot of water and eggs on stove and bring to a boil.
Once water boils, put lid on pot, turn off heat and move pot to another burner.
Wait 10 minutes, and they're perfect!
Good luck :)

If you are putting an egg in cold water to begin with, you need to start to watch your clock when the water starts to boil. 10-12 minutes in boiling water should be enough to get it hard but not too hard.

Once it reaches a boil, I set the microwave timer for 10 minutes. Always comes out just right. Oh yeah, once I take it off the heat, I dump the boiling water and set it under cold running water. That stops the boiling process. Let it sit there awhile until fully cooled.
