Scenario:
I really want to become a lawyer, but my mom says doing differently would be a better path. She says that "what if a big depressions comes and lawyers aren't in high need"---which is true, they're even in high need now, but that doesn't bother me, but what bothers me is how expensive it is for law school. I mean what if i went schooling for 8 years to become a lawyer to only eventuate into an unemployed law degree-wielding vagrant. Not a risk i'm willing to take, thats why i have to do a little more thinking. Now she suggests that i become a x-ray technician because it requires the least amount of schooling for a lot of money per year. The ideas seems appealing because i could use that money to further my education as a lawyer, but the problem is that i would have wasted two years of potential law education to make money. She says if something horrible were to happen, x-ray technicians would be in high demand and would be a inevitable necessity because people care more abou

Go to law school. Believe me, in this lifetime, unless they drop the big one, there will always be good jobs for lawyers. And you could use that education to help so many other people. Help the poor. Do justice. It would be a noble calling if you have the heart to do it.

Before you decide whether to go to law school or not, ask yourself these questions:

a) Am I willing to study night and day, and put in MANY extra hours, while my friends are out partying?
b) How do I feel about crime and punishment? Would I represent someone I think is guilty (as a defense lawyer) or prosecute a possibly innocent person (as an ADA, for example)?
c) How good is my memory (it must be sharp as a tack!)
d) How willing am I to accept help from others (you WILL need them!).
e) How much chutzpah do I have to stand up against people on BOTH sides who try to play me or even threaten me, to get what they want? (if you're a wimp, quit NOW!).
d) How much do I love arguing for the sake of arguing? If the answer is "A LOT"...then you'll probably be VERY GOOD as a lawyer!
d) How far will I go to achieve my goal (winning) WITHIN THE BOUNDS OF THE LAW? - If your answer is "all the way"...then YOU SHOULD BE A LAWYER!!!!

DON't let anyone tell you otherwise! People like you are few and far between!

Here's a couple sites to check out. Don't let ANYONE tell you that your dream is unattainable!

The health care industry concerns me. Hospitals are closing and that is not good. There is a HUGE Nursing shortage, and that is a much better career path
Since there are 2 successful lawyers in my family, I have nothing negative to say about Law school. If you feel you would enjoy the work, then start looking for a good college and lots of scholarship $$$
My family members went to the Hastings Law School (UC) here in California.
Whatever you choose, good luck !!

Do something that shows that you are intelligent and hardworking. Plenty of people study law or engineering or physics etc and end up doing different jobs. A degree just gets your foot in the door. If you can show you are adaptable and able you'll never have problems.

better to concentrate on being happy, as economies will always change but your moods will always be there!

I think your mom is right but i also think you need to do what you want to do not what your mom wants you to do.Your mom is very smart and thinks about your future but you cant let her make all your decisions for you.You have to make your own decisions sooner or later and i think you should do what YOU want to do.And if you want to become a laywer then i think you should and to tell you the truth i think laywers will always be needed.I hope i helped you as much as i could.

What about being a court reporter? The time requirement is far less and there is always a need for one

Do what you want to do. Don't do something because someone else thinks it will be a good job. Do what YOU want to do.
