U.S. companies build sweat shops in Mexico and the pay is appx. $40.00 to $60.00 weekly, which is $160 -$240 per month. Would you be able to pay rent, utilities, work expenses, etc. and feed your family? I don't think so, even if you lived there. If the U.S. government passed a law regulating companies to pay a minimum wage, would it help?

The last time I was in Mexico, around 3 years ago they were going through an upheavel since the Chinese were undercutting all Mexican produced products by a huge margin. Mexico may be corrupt and a decade behind in the times but they do try to help their people. The only problem is there is soo much corruption there that when one person does try to help you end up running into 3 others when do not.

Heinrich, sometimes you make sense and other times you do not. How is Nafta Mexico's fault? It takes 3 to tango and Canada as well as the US signed the darn thing? You really should try to redirect your anger. It's not only Mexico's fault with that is happening down there. Much of if has to do with greedy politician on BOTH sides conspiring so they can make a profit. The people themselves have nothing to do with it.

Anyway they banned products from China that compete directly with products made in Mexico. Don't you wish our government did that instead of letting all them "made in china" trinkets pass the border?

Dar what does that have to do with it? Or do you need to post things which have nothing to do with the question at hand at random?

If somebody is "not making enough money to pay their rent, utilities, work expenses, etc." then I would recommend they either increase their job skills so they can make higher earnings, decrease their expenses, or get a 2nd job to supplement their income.

It is a fact that the better your education & skills are, the better paying job you can get.

I don't think that the U.S. companies in Mexico are paying any less to the workers than what the Mexican companies are paying them there, so why do we not hear about "Mexican sweatshops?"

To sum it up, it is not up to the U.S. government what wages Mexico pays its employees. That is an issue that is up to the Mexican people.

The minimum wage has been increased in 9 states above the Federal $5.15. Republicans refuse to take any action before elections. After elections they will tell us what they want to cut to pay off the $9 trillion debt they have run up. Ending Social Security has long been a goal. When I lost my job to Mexico along with 800 others Mexicans were working for 60 cents per hour and no benefits, they work 60 hours a week and often live in Company homes. The company charges them rent on the slums they live in.

The US can not pass a law that has any effect in Mexico

And of course China or some other place pays even less than that.

But in Mexico people line up for a dollar a hour jobs and will stand outside just hopeing they need to hire someone

Are you asking about rent and utilities in the USA or Mexico? Frankly, the wages paid in Mexico are none of our business, that is for the Mexican government to decide. We need to take care of this side of the border.

Thats is a gaggle of crap in case you tripled their wages it would not improve the price of the product 15 to 20% more beneficial than it really is now. Potatoes are dug through device no longer human beings. The tomato farmers the position I stay pay minimum salary to children and performance no problem getting their product out to marketplace

The U.S. can't mandate a minimum wage law outside it's borders. That's why so many large manufacturing companies go to latin american and asia to pay pennies instead of dollars.

Fr. Chuck is right - we cannot pass laws in Mexico.

What's more, Mexico is so corrupt that if the workers get more, government will force them to give more in bribes to have those cushy jobs, thus depriving them of the benefits.

Mexico is a bribe-ocracy.

It is quasi-legalized slavery. Closing the border and deporting all illegal alien would help. Putting those who employ illegal aliens, in prison for 5 years with no parole and a $250,000 fine would help. NO AMNESTY or mention of it would help...

Removing the corrupt Mexican government would help.... it is the root cause of illegal aliens invading the USA from Mexico.... corrupt rich ruling class forcing their people into slavery and a life of crime....

Maybe Mexico should worry about Mexico. Mexico's economy would be even worse off without the jobs they have taken from Americans. To Hell with NAFTA and Mexico
