Thats called a "Missing Man" formation. It's used to salute someone that's missing/fallen, usually military personnel.

Correctly stated by many here, it's called the Missing man formation. An honor given to those (military personnel) who were KIA in a military operation.

It is normally conducted either in a flyby that has a empty slot in the wing formation, or a four ship flyby, where plane no.3 will pull up and leave the formation to signify a loss fellow companion (usually reserved for an airmen or pilot).

Its a sad day when that happens and I had to do it for one of my squadron buddy...

because one of them is invisible. Yes I said it, the government has been making invisible aircraft for years now. The idea originally came to william howard taft while reading a wonder woman comic.
