Ok, I'm going on a foreign exchange for a year and I was wondering if my dog was going to forget me. She'll be staying with my mom while I'm gone and I won't be visiting home at all, I'll be in Italy for a straight year.....so, do dogs forget easily?

Probably while your gone she will, but she'll remember you the second that you return. Good luck!

It depends on how long you've had the dog. The longer you've had her, the less likely it is that she will forget you. My sister had a cat for 12 years before she moved, and only came home once or twice a year to visit. The cat still remembered her every time. I suspect your dog will do the same.

Dogs live in the moment but they do have very good memories where scent is connected. I've seen a dog that has not been around a person for three years and jump up on the person as soon as they pick up the scent. This dog was not an outgoing dog so I know it was from memory.

it depends on the dog and breed some dogs (the loyal ones) remember others just see you as the person that feeds them there not much you can do about it really sorry. all i can think of see to have a huge great big play with the dog with all the games it likes give it some food and leave behind a sweaty t shirt or something to put in it's basket so that your smell is around and write it a postcard lol!

As long as the dog loved you. He will not forget you. I just say my dog from my childhood. I have not seen him in 3 years. He heard my voice and came running to me and was crying like crazy. He remembered me and a few trick that only he did for me as well. It was such a good reunion for the both of us. I was worried the same as you were. Good Luck !!!! No need to worry about your dog forgetting you.

No, dogs don't forget the people in their lives. My yellow labX hadn't seen my parents for 3 yrs. last year when they came up to visit and she still remembered them, it took it a few minutes to click in who they were but after she remembered she was carrying on and got so excited.......hehehe. This year when they came up to visit again she remembered them right away ;o)

No, she won't forget you. I had to leave my dog with my sister for over a year, and she remembered me immediately. It took a little bit of time for her to respond to me as her master because my sister had been her master for a year. But she will remember you. Don't worry.
