A buddy (yes, really a buddy) has a medical marijuana license and really needs his pot. He will be flying from SFO to LAX soon. Does anybody know airport policy in this situation? I told him about the legal problems with medical marijuana and State vs. Federal law, but he will be traveling within the State of California. A corrolary question would be whether you enter "federal territory" at an airport, and at what point. Any insight?

your "buddy"'s pot will be confiscated as the federal government has jurisdiction over the transporation of narcotics, even inside the state of California. The federal government, TSA, FAA and all other US government organizations have banned the possession, sale, purchase, and transportation of all controlled substances. So even though you are not leaving California, your pot will be illegal in the airport and you (or your buddy) will be arrested.

If you possess a ligitemate prescription for medical marijuana, why not just get more in LA? Seems like that would be a lot easier than attempting to smuggle it onboard an airplane.

Marijuana is banned by Federal law. Aviation and aviation security are controlled by the Federal government. Leave it at home.

You are subject to Federal law even within the boundaries of California. If you expose yourself to inspection by a Federal Officer he can, will and should enforce the law against possession of controlled substances on your friend.

The TSA runs the airports and they have zero tolerance, period. Your friend's luggage will be run thru the sniffer machines, his pot will be found, he will not make his flight and will spend a lot of time and money before he gets out of jail.

Your buddy should consider driving.

my husband also has a medical marijuana card..

if ANYONE tries to take his marijuana..all he has to do is show his card..if they still take it..sue the police/sheriff dept who took it..you can either get it returned..or get major money!

id say call the airports LAX and SF see what they say.

i live in CA myself.

my advice..call..take his perscription/drs information with him and keep his card on him.

Medical marijuana: Medical patients and their designated primary caregivers may legally possess and cultivate, but not distribute or sell, marijuana under Health and Safety Code 11362.5 (Prop 215) if they have a physician's recommendation or approval
