Honey and lemon drinks will sooth it, paracetamol may help, ibuprofen will help calm down any inflammation.

If it hurts bad when you swallow and you have mucus too, its probably a minor infection, go to your gp.

Sore throat is caused by upper airway infection. There is inflammation so naturally it hurts. There is infection so mucus production is expected as by-products of infectimg mechanisms activities. You cannot stop it once but there are remedies you can do to help. Drink lots of warm fluids. Warm lemon juice will be very great. Avoid cold drinks. Taking analgesics will give some help too. If it is associated with fever persisting more than 3 days then you require some antibiotics, but if less than 3 days fever then it is viral infection just you need rest, good nutrition and increase vitamins intake especially vit C.See a doctor if it persists.

Most sore throats come from the common cold, and a few others come from strep throat. Coughing is asymptomatic (does not indicate) step throat. Therefore, if you have a cough you probably have a cold. Take a decongestant and some analgesics, like ibuprofin, with plenty of fluids. If you feel the need to go see a doctor, do it.

dont eat/drink any dairy products - they increase mucus.
drink hot drinks - the heat helps kill virus/bacteria, black tea is good for sore throats (well ya can add a little milk if ya like)
also get one of those vitamin C tablets that ya disolve in water - they usually come in a tube and contain about 1000mg of vit C each. Take 1 or 2 a day til ya feel better.
And for pain relief, i think the dissolvable solpadeine tablets are best for sore throats
