Technically since an omniscient omnipotent god would know absolutely everything that would ever happen until the end of time before the very act of creation began, there is no reason for you to do anything in regards to your own spirituality. God would know who wins in the end, who gets saved, who does not, who believe, and who do not. Since he already knows everything there is no know about you there is no need to tell him anything or even to pray at all.

God knows everything but He does not force His will on us. If we need something specific we should pray as such. So that God has permission to intervene in our lives. But more general prayers are actually better because that Gives leeway for God to answer as He sees is BEST. Sometimes what we think we need isn't actually what we do need. And God knows best what will help us with the big picture.

We don't. We don't even have to pray in a language we understand! I usually don't.

We DO need to be sure we're not asking for the wrong things, though. Remember, we ARE praying to THE (ONLY) Most HIGH and HOLY God.

Don't pray for a job. Thank God for providing.
Don't pray for a car. Thank God for transportation.
Don't pray for food. Thank God that you're fed.
Don't pray for a spouse. Thank God for preparing you.

Remember, He made sure we had all we need in the first five days of creation--before we even GOT HERE!

So, thank Him for being such a good God and meeting ALL your needs!

Peace to you.

More to the point, isn't the act of praying an insult to god, since it is implying that god may need some help in deciding what's the right thing to do?

prayer shows faith.

James 5 :13 Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? Let him sing songs of praise. 14Is any one of you sick? He should call the elders of the church to pray over him and anoint him with oil in the name of the Lord. 15And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise him up. If he has sinned, he will be forgiven. 16Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.

Because praying isn't about asking for gifts from God. He's already given you this wonderful world to experience and enjoy. Prayer is for asking God to help you make the right choices. Talk to God about your problems and ask Him what YOU can do about YOUR problems.

Ye have not cause ye ask not. God only said he would meet your needs not your wants. If you get a want met then thats called a blessing from God. Which anything God gives us is a blessing.

I have yet to hear a person be specific when they pray. Their prayers are couched in ambiguous terms so as not to offend...Think about the prayers....they are always vague.

It's to do with making ourselves humble. We need to recognise that everything we have comes from Heavenly Father. God wants to talk to us, too - sometimes he does that while we're asking. Part of the process is aligning your own self with God's will - if you're in tune, you may find yourself asking for something different.
