I think that children should always be raised with animals. Especially dogs. Having animals at an early age helps children develope better communication skills and helps them understand other peoples emotions. Also, pet-owning children have scored higher in several areas of testing.
Hope that helps you.

To me, it seems like your pros are more convincing than your cons. The cons are sound like the child is all alone with the pet with no parents. Of course the child can't take care of the pet. Parents get the pet to have the pros, and they take care of the cons. You said the children are 1-3 years and allergies are 2-3 years. That throws things off a bit too. One con could be that children can't be expected to treat a pet the way it should be (pulling on tail, etc...), which could result in an injury for the child. You want the essay to be convinging: so support everything and only use your strongest ones, not the half baked barely qualifies in the essay.

I think what you have is great. The only thing I can think of that you are missing is that pets can hurt children as a con. I have two cats and my five year old loves them--my seven month old has just started showing interest. I try to get my young one to pet them instead of pull at the cats just because that's how children are--graby for things--I think it really teaches children the value of responsiblity and compassion---like you said! Anyway I'm sure your essay is going to be great!

A con a child at that young of age really doesn't comprehend the handling of an animal so it can easily be choked or dropped with out constant supervision.
A pro you can teach a child how to handle the animal and how to be careful with animals.

actually, there has been studies that prove that children that are brought up in a house(as in from birth) with 1 or more cats or dogs are substantially less likely to develop allergies because it builds their immune system. if you keep a completly dust/dander/germ free house, allergies are actually more likely to develop.so i see that as a pro.
