I agree that the Southern Accent can make someone sound unintelligent.
Although the accent from Gone with the Wind, to some was very romantic and charming.
However if you ever visit Lancaster County, Pennsylvania of the United States the PA "dutch" accent( spoken by locals in general, but mainly the German Amish, and Mennonite) can sound quite unintelligent. I should know my family's been here since Amish & Mennonite churchs left Germany in 1700's. Though I'm not Amsih or Mennonite myself. I once was in Florida and had a little girl from Britian tell me she knew where I was from because of my accent!! We have phrases and idioms that no one else has ever heard of!! These plain people as their often called speak and dialect of German that isn't spoken anywhere else in the world. Those who speak typical German can not understand a lot of what the locals are saying!!
Then just picture this there are Amish and Mennonite churches in the deep south, so imagine the southern and "dutch" accents combining!!
If you are from any where in Lancaster County or surrounding counties you will definately understand what I mean.
It's like you said though, the accent really doesn't tell you much about the person, or their intellegence.
I love the Austrailan accent, Aussie men sound wonderful!!!

Southern accents. They sound so uneducated. The Cajun accent, which is different from the southern accent even though Louisiana is in the south. ( I am Cajun and I refuse to speak that way.) New York and New Jersey have horrible accents. My in-laws are from there and I hate the way they speak.

I agree with you. A southern accent is always annoying to me. Also the "ghetto" accent, where people drop syllables and generally butcher the language.

dude, right on. I live in the South and have to face it every day. Ebonics get on my nerves. I mean if you have to talk, talk right.
ARE YOU KIDDING? I love the british accent and aussie too, although my all time favorite would have to be russian. it's like they slur their words.
