Everything? How about no one is actually able to do it. If they could they would take James Randi's $1,000,000.oo test and walk away with the easiest money they will ever make.
Most of the techniques involve doing some kind of "mental exercise" usually right before the person goes to sleep, which means all they're doing is dreaming. I tried for years, and never could do it. Anyone who tells you they can is self-deluded or lying.
If you meet someone who says they can, place some objects in the next room making sure they haven't seen them, then ask them to project into the next room to describe the objects. No one will ever be able to do it. If someone doesn't like what I'm saying, let's set up a test to prove me wrong.

its real. go to borders, get a book. my boyfriend got one there. n he learned a lot about it. you have to be in a calm state of mind, breathe in thru ur nose, out thru ur mouth [deep breaths] until you feel urself lifting out of ur body. but don't do it when ur tired. you can do it when u wake up, but when u wake up, don't move at all! i kno its hard, but dont. you have to think about where you wana go and everything. i suggest getting a book. internets not good enuf
