The obvious is when it is whining...The less obvious is when the ears are drawn back further than usual, and the tail is carried down, with no wag, or very little wag...Head is level with the body, or lower..
When the dog communicates all of the above, he is stressed, depressed, sad, or crying..

when dogs cry you hear them do that whining high pitched sound. Um, and if they are sad they will probably have their tale down. But you are right dogs can get depressed and you can usually just tell from their attitude.

Well, you can hear a dog whining and as far as I know, that's considered crying.
As far as knowing if your dog is sad, look into his/her eyes. They can be very expressive.
Also, maybe they're lethargic or don't want to play.
Perhaps your vet may be able to give you other examples. I hope your dog gets happy again.

When you get the bills from it's therapist. I dunno,when it gives a low whining sound I suppose and lays with it's head over it's paws

well when its sad it makes a whimpering sound and when its happy it wags its tail, and when its mad it bites or growls
