Wow. This question is great. I'm giving you a thumbs up, only because I am drinking wine from a box right now. Franzia Fruity Red Sangria, 2006. $9 a box. I highly recommend it.

A new big craze in wine is actually premium wine in a box. These are high quality wines that are sold in a box instead of bottles. The box usually runs between 12 and 25 dollars and contains the equivalent of 4 bottles. This wine is very good and very drinkable. It will save you money also because the wine in a box does not go bad nearly as fast as wine in a bottle. No air can reach the box wines, therefore the oxygen cannot affect the wine. Franzia produces cheap box wine, but is also the largest producer of wine grapes in the U.S. even selling some of their grapes to other bottling companies.

Several things to note:
1) Never abandon bottled wine
2) Not all boxed wines are created equal!! You need to stick with the ones that use the new mylar-type pouch... not the old vinyl crap!! Big difference!!!
3) Try Waltzing Vine... refuse to touch Franzia. These are the rules :)
4) Never used boxed wine with a person you're dating or trying to impress. There's nothing sexy about a spout as opposed to the ritual of using a corkscrew to open the wine. (I was horrified when Bonny Doon Pacific Rim Riesling went to the new screwcap for the same reason!!) lol

I drink wine from a box when it's the weekday and I just want a glass of wine without opening a whole bottle. In our grocery store they have little single serving wine pouches (kinda like a capri sun) I'm thinking about trying those. I still prefer wine from a bottle though there are more varieties in bottles than boxes. and actually in reference to a previous answer, a lot of what we consider GOOD wines are going the way of screw tops instead of corks, don't be such a g-dam snob!

Yes, I have. Most people do it because it's cheap. I would not reccommend it over wine from a bottle, unless you are strapped for cash or are having a big party where people just want to get trashed for cheap. It's always worth a try though. I found it sort of fun to have a wine dispenser in my fridge. I was fond of White Zinfandel.

I actually enjoy "box wine", tho the industry term for premium wines sold in "boxes" is CASK wine. Glass bottles and corks are expensive to manufacture and the cost is reflected in the final price. Cask wines account for about half of all wine sold in Europe.
There are several wineries packaging premium table wines in casks. My favorites are "Trove" and "Black Box". There are also many brands i would consider poor, but the same can be said of bottle wines.
One last point, box wines stay fresh longer than there bottle counter-part ONCE OPENED. If your looking to "cellar" wines (store for long periods) stick to bottles.

I never drank it from the box, I did use a glass. It would be pretty awkward to tip the box, it is alot bigger than a bottle. There is no thrill in it. you just get more.

Yes, you should in fact, abandon clean wine. I prefer wine that tastes like sewage, but that's just me.
