years. the vinegar is a preservative ie pickles

Actually, balsamic vinegar does NOT last that long, especially if it's stored in the light. I had some once that grew what my mother used to call a "mother" in it -- a livery growth. The vinegar still tasted okay, but the "mother" was disgusting!
