We are reading an abbreviated tidbit from "The Crisis No.1" by Thomas Paine. One of the questions on my worksheet asks "Choose two aphorisms and explain them and how they realted to the soldiers in the war." One of the aphorisms i choose was "show me your faith by your works," and i need to know how this related to soldiers? thanks!

At that time in history, some people would say they were with the revolution, but then not act like they were. Kind of two-faced.

So this quote means that the soldiers show their devotion to the cause by their actions, not their words. See how that works?

It's a variation on "actions speak louder than words".
If the soldiers were true to the cause, then they would stand and fight. When they're talking about faith here it has more to do with allegiance and loyalty, not necessarily religious conviction (although most wars have been fought for religious reasons!).

Soldiers having faith in their leaders by not turning and running, faith in their cause by fighting for that cause, and faith in their ability to win and be free.

Just my opinion, of course, but I hope this helped.
