* All firearms must be declared to the air carrier during the ticket counter check-in process.
* The firearm must be unloaded.
* The firearm must be carried in a hard-sided container.
* The container must be locked.
* It is preferred that the passenger provide the key or combination to the screener if it is necessary to open the container, and then remain present during screening to take back possession of the key after the container is cleared. If you are not present and the screener must open the container, the TSA and/or airline will make a reasonable attempt to contact the passenger. If this is unsuccessful, the container will not be placed on the plane since unlocked gun cases (or cases with broken locks) are not permitted on aircraft due to Federal regulations.
* Any ammunition transported must be securely packed in fiber (such as cardboard), wood or metal boxes or other packaging specifically designed to carry small amounts of ammunition.
* Firearm magazines/clips do not satisfy the packaging requirement unless they provide a complete and secure enclosure of the ammunition (e.g., by securely covering the exposed portions of the magazine or by securely placing the magazine in a pouch, holder, holster or lanyard).
* The ammunition may also be located in the same hard-sided case as the firearm, as long as it is properly packed as described above.
* Black powder and percussion caps used with black-powder type firearms are not permitted in carry-on or checked baggage.

Check nra.com on this subject, and the most recent issue of the NRA's AMERICAN RIFLEMAN magazine, but even before that, check with your local airport AND your airline. Everybody gets a say in this since 9/11 and the recent hoorah in the UK.

Also, since you don't know who's going to be picking through your checked duffle, and everybody down there has a TSA key, are you SURE you really need that valuable handgun in LA? If so, maybe you ought to ship it by a more secure means.

Hey, I think you ought to give "nicholasraage" 10 points. Looks like he has a real good handle on this.

Yes, you have to declare it at the counter, have it in a locked hard side container approved for airline use, and the ammunition has to be seperate in its own container. You'll be asked to show it to the TSA to prove it's unloaded, then you lock it back up in front of them and give the bag straight to TSA.

ps- I'm not sure why everyone is saying no, I do it all the time. Maybe they are thinking carry on bag, that's a BIG instant arrest. LOL Checked luggage you're fine, just make sure the case is airline approved, you can't just bung it into any old thing that locks.

I think he was the same guy who left a loaded gun at the Southwest Security terminal at BWI on Friday. I think he's a Mossad agent named Binyahim and he was testing TSA. He kept on walking down the terminal to another Mossad Agent named Zvi. They left the BWI complex in a BMW 5 Series driven by a NSA Contact only known as Bubbles.

"The passenger who had the bag managed to walk away from the security checkpoint and disappear in the terminal before he could be identified, prompting police to evacuate concourses A and B and forcing passengers to go through the screening process again."

If you're licensed in both states and its checked with no bullets you should have no problem, but check with the carrier. Hunters travel with checked rifles all the time.
