This is an old question and a tricky one. Since sound can be defined in different ways, you will first have to define sound. If you define sound as a physicist would, that is, as a series of compressions and rarefactions in a transmitting medium, then the answer is yes, a falling tree makes a sound even if no one is there to hear it. On the other hand, if you define sound as a physiologist would, that is, as the series of electrical impulses generated in the ear by the reception of the compressions and rarefactions and transmitted to the brain to be interpreted, then the answer is no the falling tree makes no sound unless there is an ear and a brain there to interpret the compressions and rarefactions in the air as being a sound. Take your choice and the answer follows.

I don't know the answer to the question, yea or nay. But what you could do is set a tape recorder out in the woods and leave it. Of, course, you would first have to cut a tree nearly to the breaking point, and let nature take its course. But, wouldn't that sort of defeat the purpose, because your original question implied a natural, fluke occurence?

No it does not.
It only makesa vibration "sound wave"
Sounds is a result of a vibration hitting a membrane and being entrpreted by a brain in to signals that a mind can understand.
Sounds and sight and any sence are the by product of action that is interepted by our body. remove body and all you have is the action not the result.
so if it falls in the forrest no sound. only vibration
