The answers I'm getting seem to indicate that the concepts of "openess" and "honesty" are not universally understood these days. Apparently the concept of "ethics" is also not being considered.

Why is that rude? They want to see if what they saw on the site can be beat or bested. The hotel should be happy that the customer liked what they saw enough to bother calling.

I'm guilty of this myself, but don't understand why it is rude or unethical to do so. The advertised special rate is just that, an advertised special rate. I am first interested in knowing if the hotel is offering any specials other than the advertised specials I have observed when booking my room, and I see no reason to pay a high rate for an "advertised special" if another, better deal is available. I've found that about half the time, I do find a better rate on a room than the offer I've found online, and I fail to see anything unethical or rude about this. Are you implying that someone should be obligated to pay more for a room because of a price they've seen online?

What is honest and open about a company having a special rate that they don't tell you about unless you ask? If you don't ask, they will charge you the highest rate they can, instead of saying "You're in luck, we have an even better rate today..."

It may seem rude if you work for the hotel and spend time telling someone the specials only to have them say "but I saw a special on the internet...", but you could save everyone time up front by just telling them the BEST DEAL you have right away.

Blessed be,

uhm, i don't understand the question? people are always looking for the best rate. if you're talking about the expedia type companies - they pre-purchase a set amount of hotel rooms per night during off peak season. thier rates WILL vary from that of the hotel directly - the internet sites buy "in bulk" and whether they are sold or not - pay for the rooms so.... their rates will always vary from the hotel itself.
