A lot of people contribute this quote to Abraham Lincoln. Actually, he paraphrased a quote from an English philosopher named Thomas Hobbes, who wrote a dissertation called,
"The Leviathan or The Matter, Form, and Power of a Commonwealth Ecclesiastical and Civil.
The quote is in Chapter XVIII "Of the Rights of Sovereigns by Institution.
" And this division it is whereof said, a kingdom divided in itself cannot stand: for unless this division precede, division into opposite armies can never happen."
