heat milk (or water) first, add butter. Turn off heat. Add potatoes slowly let them get just wet stiring as little as possible. Let sit, then wisk softly with a fork. Over mixing can cause that gummy texture.

why bother with potato flakes when fresh mashed potatos is far better and so easy. peel potatos, dice and boil until soft (test with fork, drain, add a little milk and butter mash with hand mixer.

You really have to follow the directions very precisely. I used to whip them with a fork and they always turned out fluffy.

No matter what you do, the dehydrated potatoes will always be inferior...even if only a bit.

Buy real potatoes.

Try the frozen mashed potatoes, they are really good, taste like homemade.

to much water, if you need the liquid use milk instead of water! start with slightly less than the called for amt and then increase slowly as needed to avoid too much.

when u get done whip them w/ ur mixer, i never follow the directions lol just make till ur desired thickness, and if too thick just add lil milk as ur whipping them trust me will turn out yummy
