Keep the trash in a childproof cabinet (a cabinet can be easily fitted with a childproof latch if you do not have one) or pantry.
You can try a trash can with a lid, but a dog that size will rpobably just knock it over.
I tried everything and the only thing that worked for my lab was a childproof latch on the cabinet under the sink.
Good Luck.

Well, There are several things you can do, the big thing is finding what's right for you and your dog and sticking with it.
First of all, you can try to get a trash can with a locking lid. Then you could go and buy some of the bitter apple spray for dogs ( the spray has a bad taste ) and spray the trash can and garbage. AS many people have suggested you probably should move the trash can to a secure area, like under the sink and install a child proof lock on the cabinet door or even and eye hook should do to the trick as well.
You may want to look into crate traning your dog and then you can crate her while you are gone.
The most important thing is to secure the trash can while you are gone.
You can work with her. The bitter spray, setting it up so you catch her in the act and coming right in, telling her NO! in a firm voice and stopping her as she is doing it.
Your best and fastest results will be seen if you hid the trash, and use a deterent like the spray, just in case she finds a way to get into the trash where you have hidden it.
Thanks

My lab does the same thing--including any and every trash, food or not, in the house. I finally gave up on all the various methods of securing the cans, and now, though I'm embarrassed to admit it, I collect the trash in a plastic grocery bag and hang it from a knob on one of the top kitchen cabinets. If it's something really smelly, I store it in the freezer until I can take it out.
Before I got the lab, I had, still have, a basset mix who had never touched the trash. Guess what, the lab taught her how to, and I even caught them working together on emptying a can. Dogs!!

My Lab does this, I have now gotten into the habbit of leaving the house WITH the trash can and leaving it on the porch and taking it in when I get home. I am sure that the neighbours and dogs think I am mad but it saves so much clean up and worry if they have gotten into something bad for them. I ave tried the lockable bins, the baby gates, the confining them out of the kitchen, the under cupboard bins, the under cupboard bins with kiddy locks on the cupboards and this is the only thing that works for me. I am down to one trash can in the whole house as she will even dive in teh bathroom one where no food is ever thrown and tear everything in their up as well. If you find something that works let me know!

You can try to train your dog not to , but it's something they may always do. Most importantly, just make sure the trash is secure. Get a new trash can if needed and keep all garbage picked up and off counters and tables.

You have to put it up or maybe in the garage when u leave. This is to big of a temptation for them, and even the best of dogs will give in to getting into the garbage. At some time or another there was something real yummy in there, and now their brain is conditioned to get into garbage anytime u arent around. Best bet take away the temptation, again u can lock it up, put it up or stick in the garage.

You can't do anything about it when you are not home. But most of the time, simple obedience training and a 45 minute run every morning could be the answer! You should watch/ask the Dog Whisperer!

If you get one of those security gadgets that you put on a window, that might help. When the lid closes or opens, it makes a beeping sound, so she will be alarmed, thus not wanting to put her head in.
I hope that isn't to confusing!!

try sprinkling ammonia in the garbage bag before you leave, animals are not supposed to like the smell and therefore they will usually stay away. we had to do it for a while when we went to bed and now my dog doesn't even sniff the garbage can.
