okay i hate to be the jerk here but for all of you who are insisting on false... i really think youre niave. ive met plenty of homeless people because i worked in downtown cleveland for a year. 100 yards away from one of the biggest homeless shelters.
homeless people are not there because they are down on their luck. MAYBE 1% of them. but how many people do you know who cant hold down some kind of a job so they can have some kind of place to live? ...who cant even get registerd with some kind of government program to get a place to live.
newsflash: homeless people are either crackheads or just plain lazy.maybe some of them have mental illnesses to go along with that but youd have a mental illness too if you were a crackhead living on the street stealing **** so you can buy crack.
okay im all for helping people, i really am. but lets not do things so stupidly because giving to the homeles only encourages them.

chris dont be a fool.
i havent had nothing handed to me. in fact my parents kicked me out of the house wheni was still in high school. but i joined the military, went to iraq, worked my butt off and now im living good. and when i say worked my butt off im saying worked harder than you even understand. for years.
and i have known plenty of homeless people. so why dont YOU get the real life experience with them and then come back and have a grown up conversation with me.
...and as for anyone who said something about Jesus. let me ask you, do you think Jesus wants us to be foolish stuards of his money?

I was homeless for about a year and a half. There were a few people who could get in-your-face and beg to feed a habit, but many have mental illness and have apartments set up by social services, but don't understand that. I was robbed at knifepoint over a blanket before (another homeless person) and beat up by a 'normal' group of boys because they were bored. Homelessness is a symptom of many different causes and untill those causes are addressed, there will always be homeless people. Giving money doesn't help a lot. Counselling, job training, learning to work within someone's limitations, halfway houses for ALL released prisoners, not just the one's with money, group homes from mentally ill (they can't keep an apartment on there own), and actually not giving them money, will get things started.

Well, first let me say that by generalizing "homeless" into one big bunch of lazy unmotivated people is a mistake in your logic. I have worked up stinky close and personal on a daily basis with many homeless people & people who have been homeless at some point in their lives.
If I had to make an educated guess, I would say the homeless population made up a bit like this... (from the highest % of the population to the lowest)
1) Drug Abuse Issues
2) Mental Health Issues
3) People Previously Living in Poverty who have a sudden loss of income and had no savings to carry them over.
4) Lazy & Unmotivated people who have had opportunities to work but have decided to be wanderers on the streets instead.
Drug users often do it to themselves, but once you're in that club it isn't just laziness that won't let you out. But if you want to blame them for their bad choices okay sure (but I bet there's a fair share of them that have had some sh** in their history you wouldn't be able to bear without some self-medicating either)
The second group though. Those guys I won't let you bash...
Many people with mental health issues might appear normal on the streets for a while, but do not have the mental stability to maintain employment. Will your boss let you take say 3 or 4 days off a week because you're suffering from Major Depression? Will he keep you on the payroll if yesterday you displayed hallucinatory behavior to a customer? Would you be able to remember your work schedule if you couldn't remember what year it was? I work with people like this who appear perfectly normal when you first talk to them, but on the day to day, things come out that most bosses (and landlords) just won't tolerate... And trust me there are NOT enough residential programs to house the mentally ill. A hell of a lot of them call the streets their home because society, their family, and people like you think they're lazy and unmotivated or crackheads. Sorry to burst your bubble that is just not the case. Mental Health Illness is real, and these people cry and fight to be "normal" but they can't, so don't judge them!
Always remember no matter how repulsed you are, there for the grace of God go you and I, what would you want...better yet, what would you need... someone to do for you?
(stepping down off my soapbox now)
PS
I do not believe in giving money either by the way. I'm not a fool, but give them food and give them respect. Your callous attitude is the reason kids feel it is okay to go beat up a homeless guy in the park. "They're just some lazy crackhead, right???..."

People get into a cycle. If they manage to learn to live okay homeless or on welfare or whatever they continue to do so. Call it a lack of ambition. Of course some of them are just plain crazy and some plain lazy. But most could do some kind of work and get back into normal society. Perhaps they should have a live in gardener/ caretaker campaign. Busy people need someone to do this stuff, give em a shed and food.

False. You can't make a generalization like that. Some of them work very hard for the little bit of money they can get to feed themselves. Others don't. The fact that they are homeless only means that they can't afford a place to live. There are more corporate executives that take advantage of naive people then homeless people who do.

I don't think that there is one "True" or "False" answer to that question. Many homeless people are people who would love to hold a job or live in a government subsidized place but red tape keeps many people down. And yes, some people are just lazy. You would have to go up to each of them and ask them their story-Take a poll to really find out.

False. Good lord. Does anyone seriously think that people choose to be homeless because they don't have anything better to do?
Once someone does become homeless, it is harder and harder to put a "regular" life back together.
Now, there are bad homeless people, just like there are bad people everywhere, so it wouldn't surprise me if some naive people were taken advantage of, like they are in every other corner of life.

I was homeless before. I always looked for a job, but people don't like to hire you when you haven't showered in a month. I tried not to take advantage of naive people( or anybody, for that matter) but there are always people who will stab you for pocket change or scam you into stuff. The only people I know who chose to be homeless are the prison surfers and christians who want to know what it's like so that they can better help the poor. And trust me, if a christian is that serious about their commitment to God, they aren't into taking advantage of anybody.

a lot of homeless people dont wont to be homeless and a lot of homeless people dont do drugs, i have been homeless, i lived in a home and had money every week. i payed my bills, but one day some one and took every thing away from me. i lost everything, all i had was the clothes on my back, and no one wonted to help couse they thought that they might get dirty or catch something, but the LORD helped me get back on my feet and now i have my own home and its payed for. and my bills are getting payed every month, so before the next time you see a homeless person please find out what happened to them before you judge them.

I can see that your parents kicked you out because you are a @#-hole all that Time and you still havnt pulled your head out of your Butt. Some people never do. One day you might here the POP the sound your cheeks make when you pull your head out and grow compasion and stop being a selfish child. WHen you do grow up you will figure out that you do the right thing because its the right thing its not about them its about YOU.
