I am sure there are some, but not all. many are veterans that fought in wars for US and are on the street so dont ever say they wre lazy. And some had hardships or health comditions that got them there. false is my answer.

While a small percentage will always be looking for a way to use any system put into place to help another, It is better said that most homeless are there because someone took advantage of a weakness in them.

Drugs, alcohol, are high percentage factors in homelessness, and most often both these weaknessess are being used to mask other hurts in these peoples lives.

Have they become lazy and seem to be taking advantage of people? It might seem like it if you only look upon the surface of what you see. I urge you to actually have a conversation with a few homeless and see if you come away with a different perspective on the topic.

False!

I have been homeless twice in my life.

The first time was when I was 18 and kicked out of my home and the second time was when I was 33 and going through a divorce, bankruptcy and living in my van outside the city of Detroit for over a year.

When I separated from my then husband I knew there was a choice of keeping the conversion van I had in good running order so that I could keep my job and be able to afford to eat or rent an apartment and risk the van dying out on me, losing my apartment, all my belongs and my job.

It needed a complete brake overhaul and a couple of other items and I thought I would just be stuck in my van for a couple of months then get back on my feet.

So, I put my belongings in storage for $100 a month, got a Gold's Gym membership for $40 a month, fixed the back of the van so I could camp out of it for a while and drove on as best as I could.

Throw a timing chain and gears into that and the partial engine rebuild required to complete the repairs and that made it impossible to come up with first and last month rent in an area that has almost no public transportation out of the initial downtown area and none where my job was.

My experience with other homeless people is that they were victims of circumstances that came on hard and fast so they really didn't have time to react and couldn't plan anything before they lost everything.

Once they lost everything the depression then sets in and since they can't get proper medical care or even proper nutrition it makes it all that much harder to dig themselves out of the hole they have fallen in to; especially when their self-esteem, pride and faith are all shattered.

There are some who are homeless; who are just looking for an easy hand out and some make a lot of money by being a bum.

They are the exception.

As to the vast majority though; they became a bum or homeless simply as a result of living paycheck to paycheck and then losing their job, being injured or becoming ill.

Think about it.

If you missed even one paycheck, how difficult would it be to make up for the lack of money?

Rent, mortgage, car payments, school payments, etc. It all adds up real fast.

How can you tell if someone is genuinely in need or just a scam artist?

That is a difficult one to tell but I will say that many who are homeless are far too scared to ask anyone for anything because of whatever strings may be attached to the "help" or they don't ask for money but for assistance accomplishing something, like getting a job, food, warmth or getting to some place and they are stranded with no transportation.

Try being broken down on the side of the road in the middle of winter with no heat, no food, no water, no bathroom and no cars going by that will stop and help you out for a few hours and see how long it takes before you get depressed and end up feeling hopeless.

It happens REAL FAST!

Of course many crimes against good Samaritans are perpetrated by people who play the victim too so it is really difficult to give any definitive answer.

Likewise, it is far too difficult to be making any definitive allegations either.

repeated from the last time you asked !

do you know that you need a postal address to receive a wage ?
do you know that you need a wage to put a deposit on a home ?
do you know that many people are made homeless through illness and inability to work ?
do you know that you are very uncaring if you think that people should not be helped in whatever way we can .... even if we don't understand the circumstances surrounding their plight ?

false. if you'd like to see so for yourself there are some wonderful shelters that would be able to show you - the majority are not lazy, they want to work, want to be back in the community. many have job placement and help them have a stable living arrangement to be able to find a new job and get back on their feet.

*shakes her head sadly*
Hun, you need an education. Go down and spend a week in your local homeless shelter...just make-believe, for one week, that you are one of them. Get among them, and talk to them. Hold their babies in your arms. Learn a little something about life.
Then, come back and tell us what you discovered.

False. And I won't dignify this blatantly ignorant question with further comment or proof to the contrary.

The homeless offer you the opportunity to help a fellow human being. This will make you feel good. ;-)
