Is it a good idea to join the Navy if you have a family?

Depends on your reasons for joining.

If you are looking for security, and a steady paycheck, then it's a good thing. As long as you don't mind deployments, training tours of a week or so, and the various things that go along with military life.

You have to be a strong family to be a Navy family. The spouse can be a 3, 6 or 9 month cruises. Of course, there are jobs where you don't go on ships like at the hospital. It can be done as many do it but the spouse that stays behind will have to take care of the family and you need to make sure they can do that or even want to do that.

Maybe not the nuclear navy. Subs and carriers can deploy for the better part of a year. After a while, a lot of these people try to get a different assignment or muster out.

Only if you are trying to rid yourself of that family. The military is hard on family relationships with all the moves and remote (famlyless) assignments and the family will have to "join" in spirit so as to understand the need for the inconvieniences. It is tough on those who do not understand why you can't take them to the mall this weekend or why you have to get your sleep starting at midmorning.

I was never on a ship so i cannot say one way or another. I would have liked to go as a single guy, but now that i am married i would probaly not want to be in any branch of the military.

Sure it is. Just know that it can be difficult at first to get accustomed to. As with anything, it has ups and downs.
