You have already made a right and got into the left turn lane to make a Michigan left. There is a traffic light at the signal and it is currently red. Can you make the turn, or do you have to wait until the light turns green?

(I know that most people already do, but I'm looking for any proof that it is alright.)

I've seen cops do it without their lights on, but then again cops are immune to the law.

In Michigan you can turn left on red at a one-way street that goes to the left. For those that don't know what a "Michigan Left Turn" is, it's when a left turn isn't allowed at the intersection so you must turn right and go to a cross over in the median strip and make a left turn(a sort of half U turn).

You know you are from Michigan when:

18. When giving directions, you refer to "A Michigan Left".

For those that don't know, think of a U turn...

I haven't answered, but I will leave that to the good MI folk.

Generally, I think it is okay. I've seen signs that read "Left turn on red permissible when traffic is clear". However, it might vary by road, area, etc.
