I plan to attend my daughter's Naval graduation on Oct.13th. in Great Lakes, Illinois. I live in Central NY, and never had to make arrangements before, such as from airport to hotel, from hotel to Navy base. I see there are hotel/flight packages, but I have no clue what hotel is a good choice within the vacinity of the base. How would I find out transportation arrangements from place to place once I do get into Chicago ahead of time so I know my trip is planned out? Any suggestions???

O'Hare airport has a phone booth section near parking and pickup that travelers can use to call a cab/taxi, you don't have to reserve one. Pick up one of the phones and a operator will help you get a cab. A taxi usually will charge forty to fifty dollars for a shuttle from O'Hare airport to Great Lakes (North Chicago) one way. There are plenty of hotels in Waukegan which is just north of the base that are pretty decent and reasonable, Holiday Inn, Best western, Red roof, etc; The Hotels in North Chicago are not so great. There are a dozen taxi services in the area to help you get around (Yellow taxi, Checker Cab,etc;). Hope this helped.

Look up the Naval Training Center in Great Lakes, Ill. There is a website that gives you information about it, such as places to stay, etc. There is a motel for families of graduates with discount rates, and I believe there is one on base for free. Good luck!
