I have an 8 month old rescue who was the original digger who would only dig under the fence to get next door to play with the neighbors dog. I've since adopted 2 other sister puppies who are now 4 months old. Now all 3 are digging every where! Along my house, in the middle of the yard, beside my patio and under the fence on all 3 sides!!! This morning 2 of them got out of the yard when they were out doing their morning duties in less than 10 minutes! Now I'm so afraid they're going to get lost or hurt. They are all inside dogs that are only out to do their business and to play when I'm outside with them. I'm about to call a cement company and just have them pour a slab on my entire backyard. They get lots of love and attention, have plenty of chew toys, go on walks and car rides. I've put their "droppings" in the holes, put bricks and wood along the fence and just don't know what else to try. Any useful suggestions would be appreciated.

) Try to exercise your dog more. Dogs that are properly exercised will usually not start digging in the first place and will be less likely to do it. Take them for walks regularly and make sure they have space to run around in.

2) You could try to make it harder for the dog to dig in certain areas. There are a lot of ways around this. For digging outside of fences, bury rocks and chicken wire fence for about a foot under the fence along the edges. This will keep your dog from getting out under it. You can use similar fences to keep the dog away from a garden. There are also a lot of people who claim that if you bury the dog's feces in an area where it likes to dig, it will stop. I'm not sure if that really works, but it's worth a try.

3) Another option is to create a "dig pit." If you've got a big enough yard, designate a certain area as a place where it's OK for the dog to dig. Bury some rawhide bones, toys, and treats there, and encourage the dog to dig there, rewarding it with treats when it does. When it digs up the bones, it will keep digging in that spot as it learns that it can find stuff there.

A friend of mine is a trainer, she suggested that you fill an empty spray bottle with water, when you see them digging do NOT yell at them, walk over to where they are and spray them in the face...if this does not work, fill the holes with water...last resort...go buy an electric fence apparatus that you would use for goats or hog containment, when you install it and attach it with the grounders, etc...make it no more than 5 inches off the ground, they will hit it one way or the other from either side, and they will not be digging or trying to go under any more. My bf and I had to do it that way as a last resort 3 yrs ago when our stupid neighbors dog kept digging holes to get into our yard. We told her what we were doing and that if her dog got a small jolt she could not sue us because the dog was coming onto our property. It never hurt the dogs, it scared them more than anything.

You never mentioned what breed your puppy was. There a dogs in the sporting group and they love to dig holes, because that's what they originally were breed for. It's their nature and you need to doggie proof your fence.

Is this feller a lab or some other kind of water dog? Is it part of their disposition? I raise labs and that is one of the major problems they have. usually they are digging to find a cool place, sometimes it is boredom. I keep firewood around the house and when they get bored I give them a piece. They chew on it and it and crazy as it sounds it calms them.

Dogs dig because that is a way for them to cool off. They do not have a heating system like us. They may lay in it awhile. find a cool place for your dog it might help.

Put Black Pepper in the hole and the puppies will smell it, they will start sneezing and will not want to be in the dirt.
