The only way to break a habit is to replace it with another habit. Every time you catch yourself biting your nails, do something different with your hands and mouth. For example, chew a piece of gum and twiddle your thumbs. A good way to help you remember is to try to keep your nails looking clean and manicured. If you put some effort into getting them to look nice, you'll notice them more and be more inclined not to destroy your hard work!

I was told that the best way to quit a habit (which is a behavior) is to change the behavior to something else. You could go and bandaid all your finger tips for a day or two and each time you find yourself wanting to chew on your nails (usually an unconscious behavior reaction)...since you have the bandaids on to remind you that you are biting...take your hands away from your mouth and do something else. You may have to do this for a while. You must make a conscious effort to stop. This is true for any other habit...like smoking and drinking. If you are normally biting your nails out of a nervous habit...get a squishy palm ball and squish it when you get nervous. That is a better habit than biting your nails.

Go to a drug store and ask the pharmacist. Their are over the counter products that you can get to put on you hands. These products taste so bad you will stop putting your finger in your mouth.
Also try rubbing real hot !!!!!!! peppers on your hands that will stop you from putting your fingers in your mouth. Just don't stick you finger in your eyes after you have the pepper on your fingers.

Most times you'll bite them out of habit and not even realize you're doing it. You need to make yourself aware of your actions to break the cycle.
Polish them ot buff them, squeeze your thumb everytime you get the urge to bite them, etc. Just some ideas to break the automatic (conditioned) cycle.

Get some quinine from the drug store, dissolve some in water and dip your fingers in to that. Unless you like extreme bitter, you'll stop that habit immediately.
