You alluded 2 points;

1. Growing beard
2. Changing name

After someone converts to Islam, it is enough for him to have faith in all basic beliefs to be considered as a Muslim. Growing beard is recommended for Muslim males, but not obligatory. There are lots of Muslims, including converts, who practice islam regularly but don't have beard. But, growing beard is following what our prophet did, so if a Muslim tries to follow what prophet did, he has reward for it.

I think changing name is important when someone converts. A Muslim has to have Islamic name.

If someone starts asking all why's about what Muslims do the it doesn't make any sense. Why do Muslims say Jesus is not the son of god, why Muslims have to change their names after convert, why Muslims wear small hat etc then my answer is If a Muslim has to follow everything out of Islam, then s/he is not a proper Muslim. To be a proper Muslim, s/he has to bear unique signs of the religion.

That's not necessary. It's up to the person. They may if they want to, but just because you've converted doesn't mean you have to grow a beard, and appear Arabic. What's with the Muslim thing with Arabs? Not all Muslims are Arab...

Not neccesarily. Some scholars say that they should, some say they shouldn't. I don't see anyhting wrong with doing it, but I also think its wrong for that to be forced on someone. Islam is a religion, not a culture. For example, I'm Muslim, but I'm still an Irishman at the same time. As for the beard, scholars disagree on that too. I don't think its absolutly necessary, but not a bad idea either.

nope they don't have to grow beards and appear arabic that is their own chice and yusuf islam decided he wanted to grow a beard and if tht makes him appear arabic then so be it, as long as he is comftorble with it.

As for the changing name usually yes u would change ur name but not everyone does.

In the same sense that Jews have to grow 'Payots' from the temple of their heads and always wear those little hats.

In other words, it depends on what kind of Muslim you are. Muhammad Ali and Mike Tyson are Muslims; they don't have beards. (Ali *did* change his name though)

no they do not...most people do becuse they have converted and want to be very religious..they feel that this will make up for them following this religion all there lives. all a convert has to do is pray 5 times daily and stay respectable..like any muslim..they have to follow the religion
