Does anybody think they can tell if my cockatiel is a female or male? My bird is 9 weeks old and makes high pitched chirp, squeaks, and weird chirps. The bird loves to sit on my sholder, pick up things and carry them around and drop them. Still a little bit nippy has a bright yellow crest, yellow tail feathers, has grey and yellow face but hasn't had its first molt yet. Has a light orange cheek patch loves to explore new places and get head scritches.. Is it too early to tell? What sighns will tell me if its a male or female?

It is difficult to sex a cocktiel before it's first moult.
Most cockatiels have femal coloring until then. After the first moult, you should be able to sex the bird by observing it's coloration.
(That works with all but the lutinos)

Good luck.

LEVI that is not true, usally even a PIED female will have stripes on her taile, a male will always have solid colored tail feather along with maybe a few speckled looking ones. But if your bird is a female she will have stripes on her tail, and only chirp, a male will wistle all kinds of tunes and sometimes talk words you understand. But females will only chirp. Also a female will have grey on her face where as a male will have a all yellow face or all white face depending on mutation

Females have mainly grey faces, with only a little yellow. After first molt, a female will have the white bars on her tail.

This is how to sex a normal grey.

The colors are important factor in determine the sex of a bird but in some species you have to send off a piece of the toe nail or feather and they will send you a band after they determine what the sex is. I forgot but the foot you put the band on shows everyone else what sex it is.

It might be a male because males have brighter colors than the females do so the males can attract the female with their color.

cockatiels have to be sexed via DNA or surgical to determine the sex 100% accurately. it can not be determined by coloring as many think. same with My Quaker parrot.
