Yes by all means get a second bird. But get something other then a parakeet. Get a conure or something. It will not buddie up too close with the parakeet and you will still have a great friend with both birds. If you get two of the same breed you will find they will buddie up and you will be forgotten about and will just turn in to the rent or the meal ticket. Nothing more.

It depends on what your expecting from your bird. If you want your bird to interact with you it may not be the way to go. Parakeets will bond with people when there are no other parakeets around. Your bird will be more attached to you if it is the only bird. However if you don't have the time to let your bird out everyday and interact with it, your bird will need a friend. Birds are social creatures and need to interact, whether with you or another bird.

We had a parakeet and it was really sociable until my brother's girlfriend had brought her cockatiel over. After that we ended up getting another parakeet to keep "Keet" company since she was no longer friendly to us. We have since added 2 lovebirds to the cage and all four get along wonderfully. The Parakeets and Lovebirds interact with each other and play with each other on the swings.

We are assuming we have a male and female of each set, so far we have not had any eggs or additional birds. We were told that if you don't want baby birds, don't put a nesting box in the cage. No nesting box - no natural instincts to breed.

It depends. if you spend most of your time with your bird and its really close to you, then dont, because your current pet will see a new one as competiton for your attention. But if you dont spend much time with your bird, it will pine for companianship and eventually become depressed. And in severe cases , it will pluck its feathers and die from loneliness. So, if u dont spend much time playing with ur bird, then get it a friend, preferably the same sex, otherwise they might mate and have unwanted babies. And if u do get a new bird, give a seperate cage and put it in quarantine for a month in case it has a disease. after one month, let your parakeets slowly become acustomed to each other, so put the cages next to each other and let them play together supervised at all times until they are ok with the new situation. if they fight, put the new bird back in its cage and keep trying.

It is more likely that having one parakeet you'd be able to teach it to talk, and it would be more friendly to you (More tame), on the other hand if it's not that tame anyway or you don't want it to talk, then get another, I have two because I don't pay a whole lot of attention to them (other than giving food and water) so they keep themselves occupied.

They do like company, but you should understand that they sometimes become less interested in you, when they're around other birds. But generally, they're usually a little happier. Make sure you have two of the same sex. My ex gf and I had two that soon became four.
